IV tPA vs. no treatment
- Onset to treatment within 3 hours
- Good outcome with no or minimal deficit 3 months after stroke: 39% vs. 26%
- Risk of brain bleeding with worsening neurological status 6.4 % vs. 0.6%
- Risk of Death: 17% vs. 21%
- Overall, for every 100 patients treated within the first 3 hours, 32 had a better outcome as a result and 3 a worse outcome.
- Brain hemorrhages related to tPA caused severe worsened final outcome in only 1% of patients.
- Patients who are treated with IV tPA are discharged home earlier, are more often discharged home versus to a nursing home and report a better quality of life.
- For every 8 patients treated, 1 has a near normal outcome.
- For every third patient treated, one has an improved outcome.
